The
Make A Promise Coalition, whose activities are
funded primarily from a Drug-Free Communities grant
and local matching funds, for the most part has for
the past three years acted directly in the community
(e.g., coordinating prevention programs and services
or advocating for an environmental/policy change)
will now change their focus to work to build the
capacity of other organizations (through convening,
incubating, training, or technical assistance).
We
feel this is the best way to avoid duplication of
services and for all of the agencies who implement
different strategies for drug prevention activities
to use their resources wisely while maintaining the
scope of services outlined in their respective grant
contracts. The goal is to use the resources in the
community to provide a comprehensive prevention
program.
The
goals of the DFC are (1) to reduce substance abuse
among youth in Warren County, Mississippi and,
over time, among adults by addressing the factors in
a community that increase the risk of substance
abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the
risk of substance abuse; and (2) establish and
strengthen collaboration among communities, private
nonprofit agencies, and our state and local
governments to support the efforts of the Make A
Promise Community Coalition to prevent and reduce
substance abuse among the youth Warren County.
